Delegate Mahan appreciative of appointment, welcomes new challenge

CHARLESTON - Delegate Virginia Mahan said today she was honored to be asked to join the House Rules Committee leadership team, which was expanded this week to include four additional members.

"I take the responsibility very seriously and I'm eager to get to work," the Summers County Democrat said. "It pleases me that the Rules Committee has been expanded to be more inclusive and to provide a philosophical and gender balance."

Mahan is chair of the House Rule-Making and Revue Committee, a position she has held for the past two years.

The Rules Committee now has 16 members - three additional Democrats and one additional Republican. The committee serves in an advisory capacity to the Speaker, voting on the day-to-day operations of the House. As the session progresses, the Rules Committee meets daily to direct the flow of legislation from the various committees to the House floor.

In addition to appointing Mahan, House Speaker Bob Kiss, D-Raleigh, appointed Harrison County Delegate Barbara Warner, chair of the House Roads and Transportation Committee, and Mingo County Delegate Steve Kominar, vice chair of the Judiciary Committee. House Minority Leader Charles Trump has appointed Delegate Mike Hall of Putnam County to be the new Republican member of the Rules Committee.

Mahan, who is serving her fourth term in the House, is joining the Rules Committee at a time when the House leadership plans to take on four major issues - medical malpractice insurance, workers compensation, reduction in government, and all-terrain vehicle safety - during the next two weeks.

"This promises to be a very productive session," Delegate Mahan said.
