Delegate Virginia Mahan Listed as “Up and Coming Star” in National
Journal
In a recent report, the National Journal listed Raleigh and
Summers Counties Delegate Virginia Mahan (D-27th District) an
up-and-coming star in West Virginia politics. The National
Journal, long known for its in-depth research and analysis of elections
across the country, wrote about Mahan in an article entitled “The Lost
Election-West Virginia: Coal Miner’s Swing State.”
“I am a little surprised that I have drawn this kind of attention from
such a notable national publication. But honestly, I’ve just
tried to do the job the people from Raleigh and Summers Counties have
elected me to do,” Mahan said.
The National Journal Reported:
“State Rep. Virginia Mahan (D)–First elected to the
state House in ‘96, she has a great deal of experience working on
highway safety and consumer advocacy for various national and state
non-profits, “the most savvy, fearless grassroots organizer in the
state”; as Chair of the committee on Legislative rule-Making, she has
worked diligently on efforts to upgrade laws dealing with domestic
violence, child advocacy and pay equity.”
Mahan recently announced her intentions to run for re-election to the
House of Delegates and has held successful fundraisers in Charleston
and Beckley.
“The constituents of my district have been very supportive of me over
the years. Although many approached me about running for higher
office, I think right now I can get more done in the House of Delegates
where I have built up seniority and chair an important committee.
I would be greatly honored to serve another term in the House.”
Delegate Mahan is the Chair of Legislative Rule-Making and Review
Committee and a member of the powerful House Rules Committee where
critical decisions about legislative initiatives are made.
